Our country's new energy storage total installed capacity accounts for over half of the global share for the first time.

BEIJING, March 31—(Reporter Ding Yiting) The “Energy Storage Industry Research White Paper 2026,” released on March 31, shows that by the end of 2025, China’s newly added total installed capacity of new-type energy storage surpassed 100 gigawatts, accounting for more than two-thirds of the domestic power energy storage total, representing an increase of more than 40 times compared with the end of the “13th Five-Year Plan” period. In the global market for new-type energy storage, its share for the first time exceeded half, reaching 51.9%.

In terms of technology structure, lithium-ion batteries remain dominant, with an installed capacity share of over 96%. However, as multiple megawatt-scale long-duration energy storage projects have been put into operation one after another, the technology structure has gradually shown a trend toward diversification. A number of cutting-edge new-type energy storage technologies, such as solid-state batteries and hydrogen energy storage, are accelerating. This will support future new-type power systems’ demand for energy storage with multiple time scales and high safety. In terms of regional distribution, since the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, new-type energy storage projects have been accelerating their concentration in areas rich in wind and solar resources, such as Northwest China and North China; Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang have become the fastest-growing regions.

Chen Haisheng, chairman of the board of directors of the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance, said that China, the United States, and Europe still remain the three regions with the largest global energy storage market size. China’s newly added installed capacity of new-type energy storage has ranked first globally for four consecutive years. But as energy storage markets in the Middle East, Latin America, and other regions rise rapidly, the global energy storage market is gradually expanding into a wider range of regions.

During the “15th Five-Year Plan” period, new-type energy storage will become the main carrier for adding flexible regulation capability to power systems. At the same time, the new-type energy storage industry, even as it develops rapidly, still faces some challenges, such as the need to improve market mechanisms and project management standards, and the further enhancement of the maturity of certain energy storage technologies.

A relevant official from the Energy Conservation and Science & Technology Equipment Department of the National Energy Administration said that efforts should be made to accelerate the improvement of the market mechanisms for new-type energy storage. Localities are encouraged to study and explore auxiliary service product types based on local conditions, and to gradually expand the scale of new-type energy storage participating in auxiliary services. New-type energy storage capacity pricing mechanisms should be improved, and a reliable capacity compensation mechanism should be established in an orderly manner, to guide the rational development of new-type energy storage.
