U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff stated that talks with Iran are expected to take place this week, and a response from Iran regarding the 15-point ceasefire proposal made by the U.S. is anticipated soon.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, attending the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in France, said that the U.S. expects Iran’s military actions to conclude in weeks, rather than months. This is the first time a U.S. official has hinted that the duration of the conflict may exceed the four to six weeks planned by Trump.

Rubio stated that the U.S. can achieve its objectives concerning Iran’s military actions, including the destruction of Iran’s missile and drone capabilities, without deploying ground troops.

Rubio also indicated that the U.S. has recently increased the deployment of thousands of troops to the Middle East to provide options for Trump in response to emergencies, although he did not elaborate on this.

Rubio pointed out that the U.S. is currently communicating with Iran through intermediaries rather than direct channels and has received signals from Iran indicating a willingness to engage in dialogue on specific issues; the U.S. is close to entering substantive negotiations with Iran, awaiting the designation of a negotiator from their side. It is still unclear who in the Iranian government is making the final decisions. Two Iranian officials are interested in negotiating with the U.S., but they need approval from the highest leadership. If talks take place, U.S. Vice President Wan Sī may lead the American delegation.
