AI Bias in Banking - The Risks That No One Can Ignore
Studies show that the financial services industry is expected to benefit the most from AI, second only to Big Tech. Unsurprisingly, enormous investments are being made across the sector, from AI chatbots improving customer service to advanced models for KYC, AML, fraud detection, credit risk scoring, and insurance claim processing. Additionally, AI drives increasingly personalized services, such as investment advice, pricing, and next-best-action or product recommendations.
But with this massive deployment of new technology comes a new category of risks. AI introduces unique threats, including prompt injection attacks, risks of exposing personal and confidential data, and flawed results due to hallucinations or inherent bias. This last risk “bias” is the focus of this blog.
AI models are not simple rule-based systems. Most are built on complex machine learning or deep learning architectures, statistical “black boxes” made up of vast matrices of weights and parameters. This complexity makes it impossible to fully predict or test all possible outcomes. It also makes bias harder to detect and much harder to explain or correct.
Bias in AI isn’t a superficial glitch. It stems from deep-rooted issues in data, assumptions, model design, and the socio-cultural context in which AI is developed.
In financial services, bias can have real consequences. It’s not just a fairness issue, it’s a risk management concern. It can lead to reputational damage, regulatory exposure, legal liability, erosion of customer trust, and ultimately, unfair treatment of individuals who deserve equal access to financial services.
Most financial AI models are trained on historical data - past loan applications, credit scores, transaction histories, demographic patterns. But this data often reflects structural inequalities: under-lending to certain groups, socio-economic disparities, historical discrimination… When a model learns from such data, it can perpetuate or even amplify those patterns.
And also newer data sources, such as transaction behavior or mobile app usage, are also not bias-free. These features may correlate with protected traits like gender, ethnicity, or age even if those attributes aren’t explicitly included. In other words, bias can seep in through seemingly “neutral” variables.
Because models don’t just learn data, but absorb the worldview embedded in how that data was collected and labeled, the bias becomes deeply entrenched.
A recent study from Harvard illustrates this. Researchers compared ChatGPT’s values with real human data and found that its cultural alignment closely mirrors Western Europe or what the study terms “WEIRD”, i.e. Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich & Democratic.
This makes sense: most of the data these models are trained on, and most of the people building them, come from WEIRD societies. So even if the model “speaks” many languages, it still thinks in one. AI doesn’t just carry bias, it carries a worldview, with built-in assumptions about what is “normal”, “rational” or “moral”.
The same applies in financial services. A credit scoring model trained on high-income, Western European users may fundamentally misread behaviors of underbanked or immigrant communities. The baseline for “normal” simply doesn’t apply.
No surprise, then, that in Europe under the EU AI Act many financial AI applications (e.g. credit scoring models) are now classified as high-risk. This means providers must:
Of course, completely eliminating bias may not be possible. But financial firms can and must take meaningful steps to reduce it:
Train with representative data: Ensure datasets reflect the population the model will serve across geographies, socio-economic backgrounds, gender, and more.
Audit and test for fairness: Apply fairness audits, subgroup performance analysis, and bias detection tools. Consider mitigation at all stages: pre-processing, in-processing, and post-processing.
Build diverse teams: Involve data scientists, risk experts, compliance officers, social scientists, and representatives of impacted communities. A broader range of perspectives helps reveal blind spots.
Keep humans in the loop: For high-stakes decisions (e.g. credit approvals), automated models should support (and not replace) human decision-makers.
Embrace explainability: Where possible, use interpretable or hybrid models, even if it adds complexity.
Monitor continuously: Fairness can drift as real-world data changes. Retraining, auditing, and oversight must be ongoing.
Reducing bias (e.g. via balanced data, model constraints, or explainability measures) often comes at a cost. Not only in model complexity and implementation time, but also in model performance. Nonetheless in financial services it’s a necessary trade-off. Financial firms must balance performance, fairness, compliance, and inclusion. There’s no perfect answer, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. Ultimately, the path forward requires recognizing that AI isn’t just a technology. It’s a mirror of us, i.e. our values, data, and systems.
