From Meme to Icon: How Pepe the Frog Conquered the Internet and the Crypto Community
Pepe the Frog is one of the most influential internet symbols of the 21st century. What started as an ordinary comic character has turned into a global meme that not only defined internet culture but also became a battleground for ideological debates, and later found a second life in the cryptocurrency world. The story of this green character is a story of how a simple image can acquire multiple meanings and significance.
The Birth of Pepe: When a Frog Became an Internet Star
It all began in 2005 when American artist Matt Furie published the comic Boy’s Club. In one of the issues, a character appeared—a green frog named Pepe, who said the phrase “Feels good, man” in a typically inappropriate situation. This scene became the first meme, but the true explosion of popularity happened later.
In 2008, users of the 4chan forum discovered an image of this character and started transforming it. Sadness, anger, happiness, despair—each emotion could now be expressed through variations of the meme. Sad Pepe, Smug Pepe, Feels Bad Man, and dozens of other versions appeared. The frog became a universal language of emotions for the internet community, a way to express what is hard to put into words.
Meme in the Era of Politics: How Pepe Became an Ideological Object
But here’s the paradox—during the 2015–2016 US presidential campaign, some political groups decided to appropriate this meme. Pepe, always a neutral and universal symbol, suddenly found itself at the center of ideological battles. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) even included certain versions of the meme in its hate symbol list, although Matt Furie openly opposed such uses of his creation.
This was a turning point. Pepe transformed from a simply amusing character into a complex cultural artifact that could be interpreted differently depending on the context and political views. A meme originally created to express pure emotions became a tool for political struggle.
From Rare Pepe to NFT: The Frog in the Cryptocurrency Space
However, the true revival of interest in Pepe occurred within the crypto community. A new trend appeared on 4chan—“Rare Pepe.” Unique, often one-of-a-kind versions of the frog began to be regarded as collectible items. Some were sold as ordinary images with added value.
When the era of NFTs and tokens arrived, the crypto community saw Pepe as the perfect symbol for their projects. Tokens based on the frog’s image appeared on the Counterparty platform and other blockchain networks. For the crypto community, Pepe embodied the idea that digital culture and digital assets are the future. The meme gained a new meaning: from a symbol of emotions to a digital asset with real value.
Pepe Today: What Does It Mean
Pepe’s story shows how one image can migrate across different cultural spaces, gaining new interpretations. From the original comic to internet humor, from political debates to cryptocurrency assets—this frog has traveled a path few memes could have. Pepe remains a relevant symbol that continues to evolve along with internet culture and the cryptographic space.
