Iran Situation | U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division Approximately 3000 Personnel Reported to Deploy to Middle East
The United States continues to increase its troop presence in the Middle East. According to The Wall Street Journal, citing two U.S. officials, the Pentagon plans to deploy a battalion-sized combat team from the U.S. Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East to support military actions against Iran.
The report states that within the next few hours, the U.S. Department of Defense is expected to issue a written order for deployment. This rapid response unit, consisting of about 3,000 soldiers, can be deployed to any region worldwide within approximately 18 hours.
The news indicates that this movement will include ground combat units as well as command units responsible for logistics and operational planning. The 82nd Airborne Division, part of the light infantry, specializes in rapid air assault into contested areas to carry out missions. It is based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.
The White House said Tuesday that while President Trump is considering diplomatic options, military actions against Iran are ongoing and have not diminished.
Additionally, a U.S. Marine expeditionary unit and its amphibious assault ship are reportedly set to arrive in the Middle East on Friday, the 27th. This date coincides with the so-called final deadline set by Trump for Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier, two U.S. officials stated that the amphibious assault ships USS New Orleans and USS Lorrain, along with over 2,000 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, will enter the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility on Friday. It will take several days to reach the Strait of Hormuz.
