How Much Money Is There in the World? An Overview of Global Wealth
A fascinating but complex question: how much money is there in the world? The answer depends on how we count this wealth. If we consider all forms of money worldwide, the numbers become astronomical and hard to visualize.
Total Amount of Money Available
Let’s start with a baseline figure: it is estimated that there are about $37 trillion in global circulation. This huge amount includes all physical currencies—coins and tangible banknotes—plus the funds deposited in bank accounts around the world. Physical cash alone, what we keep in our wallets or store in banks, represents only a small part of the global financial picture.
If we narrow our focus to only physical currencies (coins and banknotes), the total value is around $6.6 trillion. That’s an impressive number, yet it’s just a tiny fraction of the entire global wealth when considering all financial resources.
The Role of Investments and Cryptocurrencies
The real surprise comes when we broaden the perspective. Including investments, derivatives, and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, the total figure skyrockets to $1.2 quadrillion. This amount includes not only tangible cash but also all financial assets, bonds, stocks, derivatives contracts, and the growing digital wealth component.
An even broader measure of the money supply—which encompasses both bank deposits and all available liquid assets—extends into tens of trillions of dollars. These numbers show how vast and complex the modern financial system is, where most wealth doesn’t exist in physical form but as digital transactions and sophisticated financial instruments.
How Much of the Global Wealth Is Truly in Our Hands?
Faced with these endless numbers, an inevitable question arises: what percentage of this money in the world actually belongs to us ordinary citizens? The answer is humbling for most of the global population. While total wealth reaches unimaginable figures, its distribution remains extremely uneven, with a massive concentration in the hands of a few.
Understanding how much money is actually circulating in the world helps contextualize our position in the global economy and highlights the importance of diversifying investments, including the growing role of new assets like cryptocurrencies.
