OpenAI has made the decision to delay the rollout of its new adult chat feature for ChatGPT, citing concerns about the reliability of its age-verification system. The postponement comes after reports revealed that the platform’s age-detection mechanism was misclassifying approximately 12% of teenage users as adults, according to findings from NS3.AI. This error rate raised significant red flags among the organization’s leadership.

The safety concerns were formally flagged by OpenAI’s Expert Council on Well-Being and AI back in January. The council emphasized that deploying such a feature with existing accuracy limitations could expose vulnerable populations to inappropriate content and other potential harms. Rather than rush the feature to market, OpenAI chose to prioritize user protection and conduct further refinement of its age-prediction algorithms.
