The exit polls after the voting concluded in the Rhineland-Palatinate state election in Germany on Sunday show that Chancellor Merz’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received 30.5% of the vote, leading the Left Social Democratic Party (SPD) with 27%, indicating that Merz is likely to win this election.

This local election is of great significance for Merz because his party just lost the neighboring Baden-Württemberg state election two weeks ago, and this election could help him turn things around. As for the Social Democratic Party, which forms a governing coalition with Merz at the federal level, they have been hit hard again. After only receiving 5.5% of the vote in Baden-Württemberg, they are now set to lose their 35-year governing position in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is expected to garner 20% of the vote, consistent with their results in Baden-Württemberg.

If the final results match the predictions, the CDU and SPD may form a governing coalition at the state level similar to the Berlin coalition government.
