According to TechCrunch, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince recently made a prediction at the Southwest Music Festival in the United States. He forecasted that as generative artificial intelligence technology continues to develop, by 2027, internet traffic generated by AI robots will surpass that produced by humans. This trend will also bring new challenges and opportunities for internet infrastructure development and technological innovation.

Matthew Prince stated that the rise of generative AI has significantly changed the way AI robots access the web. Their demand for data and ability to generate traffic far exceeds that of humans. For example, when shopping for a camera, an average person might visit only five related websites. In contrast, AI agents or robots seeking comprehensive information could visit up to 5,000 websites. These visits generate real internet traffic and load, which must be considered and addressed in internet development.

Before the emergence of generative AI, about 20% of internet traffic came from robots, with the largest share from Google’s web crawlers. The rest came from a few legitimate crawlers and malicious bots involved in scams. The rapid development of generative AI has created an “endless” demand for data from various crawlers and AI robots. This change directly drives the rapid growth of robot-generated network traffic and is a key reason why its scale is expected to surpass human-generated traffic by 2027.

Matthew Prince pointed out that the surge in robot network traffic, while presenting new challenges for network load, will also serve as a major driver for technological innovation. Currently, the industry is exploring targeted solutions, such as building sandbox environments for AI agents, allowing them to create tasks on demand, and destroying the environment after task completion. He further explained that this infrastructure concept is similar to browser tabs, enabling easy launching of new code and efficient operation of AI agents. In the future, millions of such sandboxes could be created every moment on the internet.

It is worth noting that the arrival of large-scale AI robot traffic places higher demands on internet infrastructure’s capacity and adaptability. This also presents new opportunities for companies focused on content delivery networks (CDN), distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection, and other internet services. These companies will continue to explore technological upgrades and service optimization in response to traffic changes.
