According to a report by Kyodo News citing Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, Iran is prepared to allow ships related to Japan to pass through the Strait of Hormuz — a vital artery for global oil supplies.

On Friday, Araqchi told the Japanese news agency in a phone interview that Tehran has been in talks with Tokyo about the possible reopening of the strait.

Japan relies on Middle Eastern oil for about 95% of its supply, with approximately 90% of its oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz. During the US-Israel conflict with Iran, Tehran had essentially blockaded the strait.

The three-week-long war and the resulting surge in oil prices have prompted Japan and other countries to use their oil reserves.
