Tesla has received regulatory approval to sell electricity across the UK, marking another step in the company’s expansion from electric vehicles into the energy market.

The UK energy regulator Ofgem approved the application from its subsidiary, Tesla Energy Risk Investments Limited. Tesla’s electricity supply license allows it to directly supply power to homes and businesses throughout the UK.

After months of review, officials approved the company’s application on Wednesday. Ofgem stated that Tesla meets all UK requirements for electricity suppliers.

The regulator said Tesla will adhere to the same standards, supervision, and enforcement requirements as other licensed suppliers. This includes consumer protection, market regulation, and penalties for violations.

Tesla is building its energy infrastructure business alongside its electric vehicle operations. The company offers solar energy, battery storage, and grid services, and the new license could enable it to enter the UK energy market.

Tesla has previously collaborated with the UK energy industry. In 2020, Tesla Motors Limited obtained a generation license unrelated to its latest supply license.
