On February 4th local time, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen attended a hearing before the U.S. House Financial Services Committee. Democratic Congressman Sean Casten mentioned during the hearing that before Yellen took office as Treasury Secretary, the investment firm he founded had written in a letter to users that “the Trump administration would not implement tariffs” and “tariffs would trigger inflation.” The New York Times reported that Yellen directly denied during a Senate hearing last year that tariffs would cause inflation. Casten then pressed Yellen whether she chose to change her previous statement or admit she lied. Yellen responded, “If I said something wrong before, I would like to correct it. When I said ‘tariffs may lead to inflation,’ I was also mistaken.” (CCTV International News)
