According to ChainCatcher reports, on January 20, 2026, the U.S. stock market will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Due to this national holiday, there will also be significant changes to the trading schedules of CME-affiliated commodity futures contracts.

What is Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day) is a national holiday honoring a prominent leader of the American civil rights movement. It is observed annually on the third Monday of January. On this day, all U.S. financial markets are closed. Since major trading institutions, including the U.S. stock market, shut down, it becomes an important market event for global investors.

CME Futures Trading Hours Changes and Impact

On days when the U.S. stock market is closed, trading hours for various futures contracts under CME are also adjusted. For precious metals futures and U.S. crude oil futures, trading will end at 3:30 a.m. Beijing time on January 21. Meanwhile, stock index futures will cease trading at 2:00 a.m. Beijing time on the same day.

These time changes correspond to approximately 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Japan time on January 21. Traders in East Asia should adjust their trading strategies accordingly, anticipating different market conditions during these hours.

During this holiday period for the U.S. stock market, overall liquidity in global financial markets tends to decrease, and investors are advised to exercise caution.
