Public Transportation Strike in German State Enters Critical Negotiation Phase

Large-scale labor disputes are currently ongoing in more than half of Germany’s regions. The Verdi union, the second-largest organization in the country, has initiated strike actions in recent days affecting public transportation networks across various states. They endure unmeasured working hours, strict shift systems, and very limited rest periods.

The organization has submitted a comprehensive demand package that includes significant reductions in weekly working hours, restructuring of shift durations to be more equitable, extension of rest periods, and increased compensation for night and weekend work. These demands are not merely formalities—Verdi claims urgent improvements are necessary to halt alarming resignation rates and restore trust in careers within the transportation industry.

Collective bargaining is simultaneously taking place in 16 German states, involving nearly one hundred thousand employees spread across 150 transportation companies and city bus operators.
