Two critical classification systems—mineral reserves and mineral resources—provide the framework through which geologists and companies quantify their deposits. Though these terms often get used interchangeably in casual conversation, they represent fundamentally different stages of project development and carry distinct risk profiles for investors.

The Resource Classification System: From Speculation to Confidence

Mining projects typically begin with mineral resources, which encompass all mineralization identified in a particular area during the exploration phase. The classification breaks down into three categories, each representing increasing levels of geological certainty.

The Foundation: Inferred Mineral Resources

At the earliest stage, companies work with inferred mineral resources. These emerge when exploration teams have conducted minimal field work—perhaps some surface sampling or a handful of exploratory boreholes. The company identifies signs of mineralization but lacks sufficient data to confidently estimate the deposit’s dimensions or grade. Because the evidence remains preliminary, inferred resources must be reported separately according to National Instrument 43-101 standards and can only appear in preliminary economic assessments, not in detailed feasibility studies.

For investors, inferred resources signal early-stage potential but also represent the highest risk category. Promising surface indicators can disappear with deeper drilling, and extensive capital will be required before the company can reliably characterize the deposit.

Building the Picture: Indicated Mineral Resources

As companies execute more comprehensive drilling programs, they transition to indicated resources. Through systematic exploration, the team develops a clearer understanding of the deposit’s geometry, depth, strike length, and mineral composition. Indicated resources can now feature in prefeasibility and feasibility studies, allowing preliminary assessments of mining viability and profitability.

This stage provides investors with substantive information about long-term potential and helps them evaluate whether the project scale justifies further development spending.

The Concrete Picture: Measured Mineral Resources

Measured resources represent the most rigorously supported data category, derived from extensive drilling, sampling, and analysis. Companies use measured resource estimates to complete final feasibility studies and determine whether extraction economics justify proceeding to development. For investors, measured resources offer reliable insight into what actually exists in the ground and serve as a solid foundation for investment analysis.

Converting Resources into Reserves: The Economics Question

The transition from mineral resources to mineral reserves marks a critical conceptual shift. While resources encompass all identified mineralization, reserves include only the portions that can be extracted profitably under current economic conditions and technical capabilities.

This distinction matters enormously. A deposit may contain substantial mineralization that cannot be mined economically—perhaps because infrastructure costs would be prohibitive, grade is too low, or remote location makes extraction impractical. Reserves exclude these uneconomical portions and represent what the company will actually bring to market.

Probable Reserves: Conditional Viability

Probable reserves originate from indicated resources but incorporate modifying factors that affect extraction economics. These factors include metallurgical recovery rates, processing technology limitations, environmental costs, and commodity price assumptions. Probable reserves require detailed economic and engineering analysis and appear in prefeasibility or feasibility studies.

They signal management’s realistic assessment of mineable material and project economics but retain some inherent uncertainty around final extraction rates and costs.

Proven Reserves: The High-Confidence Standard

Proven reserves represent the highest confidence classification, built from measured resources and incorporating all economic, environmental, geological, and technical factors affecting extraction. These estimates reflect management’s best judgment about what will actually be mined and processed. Proven reserves get reported based on current commodity prices and form the basis for reserve life calculations and capital recovery projections.

Investment Implications: Reading the Deposit Story

The progression from inferred resources through proven reserves tells an important story about project maturity and investment risk. Early-stage exploration companies reporting only inferred resources face regulatory and technical uncertainty—they may require multiple financing rounds before proving economic viability. Companies with substantial indicated resources are advancing toward development but haven’t yet confirmed final economics.

By contrast, companies advancing proven reserves demonstrate that extraction economics make sense at current prices and with demonstrated technology. This progression directly correlates with capital requirements and completion risk: earlier-stage projects demand patient capital and higher risk tolerance, while advanced projects with proven reserves offer more concrete development timelines.

Understanding these classifications allows investors to properly assess not just what a company claims to have in the ground, but at what stage of validation that claim stands and what capital and time will be required to convert it into actual production.
