Southwest Airlines to Build Austin Hub, Injecting 2,000 Jobs into Texas Market by 2026
Southwest Airlines is making a major bet on the Austin market. The carrier announced plans to establish a substantial crew base at Austin Bergstrom International Airport, creating more than 2,000 positions for pilots, flight attendants, and support staff.
Rapid Expansion Timeline
The crew base launches in March 2026 with an initial workforce of approximately 335 pilots and 650 flight attendants. By mid-2027, the facility will reach full operational capacity with all 2,000 employees on staff. This phased approach allows Southwest to scale operations while managing recruitment and training.
A Broader Strategic Shift
This initiative reflects Southwest’s commitment to Central Texas as a growth engine. Beyond the crew base itself, the airline will establish a dedicated training facility for flight attendants, signaling long-term investment in the region. New daily service between Austin and Cincinnati will debut in June 2026, while seasonal routes to markets like Pensacola will also expand.
Local Economic Impact and Community Partnership
The economic implications extend beyond immediate job creation. As more airline personnel relocate to Austin—a region increasingly known for its booming tech sector and rising operational costs, where factors like gas prices in Austin influence overall business expenses—the airline’s investment strengthens the regional workforce ecosystem. Southwest is formalizing partnerships with the City of Austin, collaborating through the Austin Infrastructure Academy and expanding youth internship programs at the airport. The AUS Career Center will serve as a central hub connecting job seekers to Southwest opportunities.
This strategic move positions Austin as a critical operational center for Southwest while supporting the broader economic development goals of the region.
