Under extremely intense competition for mining power on the Bitcoin network, an independent miner using personal hashrate on CKpool successfully mined a block, winning 3.139 BTC (Bitcoin) in block rewards worth about $210k, with a probability of only 1 in 280k.

1 in 280k odds! Lucky winner scores a $210k block reward

A solo Bitcoin miner using CKpool won 3.139 BTC in block 943,411 on 4/3, worth about $210k in block rewards. This is the 312th solo block to be solved since the software launched in 2014.

According to data from the block explorer mempool.space, the miner collected 3.139 BTC for that block, including 3.125 BTC in subsidies and 0.014 BTC (about $937) in transaction fees. And this kind of probability is only about 1 in 280k.

The mining world’s “lottery” booth: What is CKpool?

CKpool is a service platform designed specifically for independent miners (Solo Miner). It allows holders of small-scale hashrate to avoid joining large mining pools to share profits, and instead “take on” the challenge of mining a block on their own. Traditional mining pools (such as AntPool) are funded by everyone contributing hashrate; after mining, payouts are distributed proportionally. CKpool, however, lets miners “try their luck themselves”—if they mine a block, they take the reward outright (minus a 2% fee). Once successful, the reward doesn’t need to be split with others, but it also means that if they don’t mine a block, the return is zero.

Because the network’s total hashrate is extremely high, the chance for small miners to find a block on CKpool is like hitting a big lottery. According to statistics, block 943,411 was the first solo victory for CKpool since February 28, with a stretch of 33 days. Over the past 12 months, solo mining pools have found only 20 Bitcoin blocks in total, distributing 62.96 BTC, averaging about one independent block every 18.7 days. During that period, the longest gap was 58 days.
