事件起因，是一封 2014 年由 Blockstream 联合创始人 Austin Hill 发送的旧邮件近日被重新翻出。邮件收件人中出现 Epstein 的名字，并提到 Ripple 与 Jed McCaleb 旗下 Stellar “对生态不利”。部分网友据此推断 Epstein 曾在幕后影响 XRP 或 Stellar 的发展，从而引发新一轮争议。
David Schwartz 表示，如果有人将这类说法视为“冰山一角”，那真正令人担忧的不是内容本身，而是背后的对立心态。他指出，把加密行业内部项目互相当成敌人，只会加剧割裂，对整个数字资产领域造成长期伤害。
在另一则回应中，Schwartz 进一步澄清，他从未见过任何证据显示 Epstein 与 Ripple、XRP 或 Stellar 有直接联系，也没有项目成员与其本人或核心圈层有过合作。即便 Epstein 曾与个别比特币相关人士有往来，这在超级富豪社交网络中并不罕见，并不能证明其参与具体链上项目。
从时间线来看，部分分析人士也认为矛头更可能指向 Stellar，而非 XRP。Ripple 与 XRP 于 2012 年上线，Jed McCaleb 于 2013 年离开 Ripple，并在 2014 年创立 Stellar。基于这一背景，那份提及“秘密比特币项目”的文件，与其说指向 XRP，不如说更贴近 Stellar 的发展阶段。
