Techub News reports that according to The Block, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning alerting the public to be vigilant against fraudulent tokens impersonating the FBI on the Tron network. The scam exploits the TRC-20 token standard, sending so-called "FBI tokens" to user wallets, and coerces users into providing personal information on phishing websites by falsely claiming violations of anti-money laundering regulations and asset freezing. The number of affected users remains unclear at this time.
The FBI's New York field office is urging users to exercise heightened caution regarding the relevant tokens and is directing victims to report to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). In a 2024 report, the FBI noted that losses associated with cryptocurrency fraud reached billions of dollars, representing a 45% increase compared to 2022.
