Lotte Property & Development has decided to introduce satellite internet service at Lotte World Tower, located in Songpa-gu, Seoul. This marks the first time satellite-based internet technology will be applied to a major building in Korea, as part of a countermeasure against potential network outages during disasters.
Lotte Property & Development announced that it will install and pilot “satellite internet zones” at the disaster control center on basement level 1 and the safety evacuation area on the 22nd floor. This installation aims to strengthen the building’s internal disaster response system by leveraging satellite internet technology, which enables connectivity without relying on terrestrial base stations or undersea cables.
Satellite internet, based on low-Earth orbit satellite networks, allows for high-speed internet access without a fixed wired network. Notably, it can provide stable connections even if wired networks are severed due to fires or construction errors, or in large-scale disasters where a surge in communication attempts causes terrestrial base stations to become overloaded.
This technology goes beyond convenience; it is drawing attention as a way to strengthen disaster response infrastructure by ensuring emergency communication among building occupants and facilitating smooth communication with external rescue agencies during emergencies. In large shopping malls or high-rise buildings, safety evacuation areas are critical for life-saving evacuations during disasters, making the establishment of secure communication networks in these zones a key concern in modern building management.
Based on the results of this pilot program, Lotte Property & Development plans to expand the installation of satellite internet zones to other evacuation safety zones and densely populated areas within Lotte World Tower.
This move suggests that the adoption of satellite internet infrastructure in private facilities, including large multi-purpose buildings, could become more widespread. Aligned with the government and local authorities’ emphasis on strengthening urban disaster response capabilities, there is potential for similar facilities to follow suit in the future.
